According to Reuters, Senate Trade Committee Chair Maria Cantwell said that the country could extend the ByteDance withdrawal period from TikTok's application, possibly up to one year. TikTok is now used by 170 million Americans.

The decision came after the U.S. House of Representatives voted in large numbers in March 2024 to pass a bill requiring ByteDance to withdraw TikTok from the United States within six months, with the penalty being a ban.

Maria Cantwell said that extending the deadline to one year could be a positive factor in ensuring the success of the decommissioning process. Accordingly, discussions on this plan are under way with colleagues and members of the U.S. Congress.

However, Cantwell also stressed that a longer deadline would also pose legal challenges and could last until 2025, even after the US presidential election in November 2024.

As of now, the U.S. Government has not issued any official comments on the extension of the deadline. However, senior officials have expressed concern that TikTok, a Chinese company, could pose a risk to national security by sharing US user data with third parties.

TikTok is committed to investing more than $1.5 billion in US data protection measures and data storage in the US. However, lawmakers and government officials continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure the security of US users' information and data.
